“Two Shadows One Image” by

Jayanta Roy and Sumantra Mukherjee.

Art District XIII is pleased to announce the opening of the exhibition, “Two Shadows One Image” by Jayanta Roy and Sumantra Mukherjee.

Trained as a sculptor, Jayanta Roy has concentrated primarily on painting in the recent years. His canvas works are characterized by deceptively simple compositions, often hiding multiple small images within a larger image, as a visual puzzle. His subjects are perception and recognition, investigated through signs and symbols, often with wit and irony. Roy's color palette is similarly restrained, in both style and content his paintings achieve their greatest pleasures through a stark limitation of means.

Jayanta’s works have been included in the book titled “100 Painters of Tomorrow” published by Thames Hudson in 2014.  ISBN no. 978-0-500-23923-0.

Born in 1973, in Kolkata Jayanta completed his BVA in sculpture from Govt College of Art and Craft, Kolkata in 1997.  He lives and works in Kolkata.

Sumantra Mukherjee's works are a reflection of his surroundings.  His works are loud, colourful, whimsical and chaotic.  The subjects chosen by him show emphatic involvement in and understanding of the situations faced by his contemporaries.  His artworks have a way to involve and address everyone, regardless of their interest in art.  His depiction of a subject matter lead to a boarder understanding of universal ideas.  His physical practice extends to wall and street paintings, sculpture and design.

A selection of his drawings during his residency in Het Wilde Weten Rotterdam NL were published by Back Door Books, in a book titled “Tourist Visa” ISBN: 9789492308009.

Born in 1981 in Ranaghat, Nadia Sumantra Mukherjee trained as a draughtsman from an art college in Kolkata, where he now lives and works.
